WAKE FOREST, N.C. (WNCN) - - A Wake Forest high school student who was terribly scorched playing with spray paint and fire has a message for other teenagers. Mason Dark is out of extensive care, however still at UNC Hospital being treated for burns across his body.
It's a message we've all heard prior to, but Mason Dark offers it new significance.
" Just don't play with fire," the 16-year-old said.
Sitting outside UNC healthcare facility, still bandaged, with a feeding tube and handling discomfort, he stated he wishes to share his story.
" I wished to share my story and ensure no kids end up the same way as me."
Four weeks back, life changed for the high school football player.
" It all happened in about 5-10 seconds," Mason Dark said.
He was hanging out with a group of pals on the Wake Forest greenway, delving into the river. He said he was likewise playing with spray paint and a lighter.
" I had a spray paint can and I was spraying it, and there was another spray paint can on the ground; I had a lighter in my other hand," he stated. "The one that was on the ground it combusted, so I illuminated in flames."
He jumped in the water to put out the fire. His pals assisted him leave the river and called 911.
" I keep in mind being on the ground asking people for water…… bystanders that ride their bikes on the Greenway path…… I would inquire for a water, simply to soak my skin," Mason Dark said.
That's where his memory fades, but his mama will never forget the weeks of worry as doctors battled to keep Mason Dark alive.
" He was in serious, critical condition. His lungs deviated for the worse and they had to hurry him below the burn center to the pediatric ICU," Holli Dark stated. "It was major, actually quick."
His mommy is thankful to see him smile once again.
" Walking and talking and back to my typical 16-year-old," Holli Dark stated.
Mason Dark still has a long roadway ahead, however he also has a new gratitude for the friends who concern visit, the complete strangers adding to his GoFundMe Page and the nurses and medical professionals helping him heal.
" They're taking great care of me," Mason Dark stated.
Combating through discomfort to share his story, Mason said he hopes he'll make a difference.
" Don't do foolish things," he prompted. "Don't play with fire."
