After a frustrating stretch of games, the San Diego Wave finally found their rhythm, clinching a much-needed victory against the Portland Thorns on Saturday night. With a score of 2-0, the Wave emerged triumphant at Snapdragon Stadium, taking a significant step forward in the National Women’s Soccer League standings.
Throughout the season, the Wave (5-10-7, 22 points) struggled to convert their numerous attempts into goals, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. However, the victory against the Thorns (8-10-4, 28 points) marked a pivotal moment in their campaign.
The Wave's breakthrough came after a tense second half. In the 69th minute, Jones scored from a well-placed free kick delivered by midfielder María Sánchez, who recorded her team-leading fourth assist.
Just five minutes later, Barcenas doubled the lead with a left-footed shot that deflected off a Thorns defender, sealing the victory for San Diego.
Looking ahead, San Diego is set to travel to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC in their third group stage match of the Concacaf W Champions Cup on Tuesday, October 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and fans can catch the action live on CBS Sports Golazo Network.
