2 appointments to Little Rock housing authority cleared by city board

The Little Rock Board of Directors approved 2 consultations to the commission of the Metropolitan Real Estate Alliance on Tuesday, bringing the panel back up to a full five members after months of issues.

Those consultations were Stacie Brown, who lives at the Sunset Terrace Apartments and will fill a position required to be held by a real estate authority tenant, and Monty Baugh, a regional lawyer. Only one voice against Baugh was heard throughout the conference, from City Director Antwan Phillips. There was no audible opposition to Brown's consultation.

In 2015, the housing authority commission was minimized down to a single member amid fallout from federal reports that questioned the commission's management practices and handling of monetary matters. In the fall, city authorities called for the resignation of everybody involved and voted to oust two of the 3 commissioners who didn't comply. Kerry Wright, who now works as chairperson, was the sole commissioner left at the time.

The real estate authority commission is typically a self-appointing board, but last fall's departures left it without sufficient members to conduct organization. City officials chose 2 new members in October, Karen Buchanan and Bruce James. The pair have actually stayed on the commission given that.

Commissioners are still in the thick of getting the Metropolitan Housing Alliance back on track. The commission just recently accessed to monetary files that were previously unavailable and can begin deal with the authority's backlogged audits beginning with 2019.
