2 Colorado mountain towns buried in over 5 feet of snow

DENVER (BNN)-- The National Weather Service in Boulder launched its official storm summary for the current snowstorm, revealing that 2 Colorado mountain towns were buried in over five feet of snow.

Snowfall began late Wednesday and lasted through Friday morning, making it the biggest snowstorm Colorado has seen considering that 2021. Significant snow fell throughout the foothills, mountains, Palmer Divide and the Denver metro area.

Why some Colorado areas got no snow during greatest snowstorm in 3 years

According to the NWS storm summary, Denver got just over a foot of snow. About 15 miles west, Golden got 28.9 inches of snow.

On the other hand, over 5 feet of snow accumulated about 30 miles west of Denver in Aspen Springs and Evergreen.

Gilpin and Clear Creek counties got the most snow. NWS taped 61.5 inches of snow in Aspen Springs and 61 inches in Evergreen.

On Thursday, Clear Creek County declared a regional disaster emergency due to the snow and stranded vehicle drivers. The declaration enabled the county to trigger action plans and made the county eligible for funds and resources from the state.

Here are a number of images that FOX31 audiences took in Evergreen throughout the storm.

March is typically the snowiest month of the year for Denver. The current storm brought a March month's worth of snowfall, with about a foot. This surpassed the typical 11.5 inches of snowfall for the month.

  • The western and southern suburbs of Denver got the most snow out of the city location, with overalls varying from 14-22 inches. Over the northeastern parts of Denver, including Denver International Airport, snow overalls were in the 5-10 inch variety as rain didn't change to snow until Thursday morning. Especially, this storm will not go down in history as one of the biggest snow events in Denver, as the NWS takes official measurements from Denver International Airport, which got considerably less snow than downtown Denver.

Why was the 'main' snow figure for Denver only 5.7 inches on Thursday?
