In a shocking late-night incident, gunfire tore through Humboldt Park, leaving three men wounded and neighbors on edge. The shooting unfolded just before midnight Saturday near the intersection of Division Street and California Avenue—a hotspot for recent tensions.
"It sounded like firecrackers at first, then people started screaming," said Maria Gonzalez, a resident who called 911. "I saw two men running toward the park, but it was too dark to get a good look." Crime scene technicians recovered at least 15 shell casings near a popular taqueria.
This marks the fourth shooting in Humboldt Park this month, with community activists demanding increased police patrols. The neighborhood's historic boulevards have seen a 22% spike in violent crime compared to last summer.
Area Central detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. "Someone knows who did this," Commander Elias Rodriguez stated at a predawn press conference. "We need witnesses to come forward before retaliation occurs."
