Pennsylvania State Police have announced the rescue of five children from what investigators are describing as a "dungeon-like" basement enclosure within a rural residence. The discovery was made during a search of the property on Monday, following an initial welfare check.

Discovery and Rescue Operation

Authorities were alerted to the situation after a school official reported concerns for the well-being of the children, who had been absent from classes. Troopers arriving at the home were initially met with resistance. Upon gaining entry, they located the children aged six to twelve in a locked section of the basement.

The space, reportedly accessible only through a hatch door concealed under a rug, was described as having been modified into a prison-like cell. Officials stated the enclosure was constructed with a reinforced door and a locking mechanism on the outside, preventing those inside from leaving.

Conditions and Arrests

Investigators noted the subterranean room lacked proper ventilation, adequate heating, and sanitation facilities. The children were found to be malnourished and showed signs of physical neglect.

Two adults present in the home were taken into custody at the scene. They now face a multitude of felony charges, including endangering the welfare of children, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, and assault.

Aftermath and Ongoing Investigation

The five siblings were immediately removed from the property by child protective services and transported to a local area hospital for evaluation and treatment. They are now in the care of the state.
