LEXINGTON, Ky. (BNN)-- Town Branch Park has actually officially begun.

After years of planning and fundraising, construction of the 10-acre park in downtown Lexington began on Tuesday. Officials explain it as a "extremely set green space" adjacent to the Central Bank Center and Rupp Arena.

The park will work as a trailhead for the downtown trail system, including connections to Town Branch and Legacy tracks.

" Since its beginning, Town Branch Park was pictured as Lexington's living room, a location where everybody is welcome and the neighborhood can flourish," stated Allison Lankford, executive director of Town Branch Park. "The neighborhood has welcomed the favorable effect Town Branch Park will have on our region and invested in it. We are thankful for the overwhelming support for this task, and today we take the next huge action to creating a park formed by the input of countless Lexingtonians who happily shared their knowledge, ideas, and vision for this first-rate park."

" This is a fantastic day in downtown Lexington," Mayor Linda Gorton stated. "Town Branch Park will be a location of community celebration; a location to bring your kids and your visitors; a place to enjoy a brisk walk or an evening walk. Thank you to the many people who have made this possible and particularly to Ann Bakhaus, who has actually led this effort with determination and grace."

Town Branch Park has been moneyed by over $39 million in private funds, working to transform acres of Lexington's downtown area, and will be moneyed, kept, and programmed through private funding.

Building and construction is anticipated to be completed and open to the general public in 2025.
