A nonprofit thrift store located in MacArthur Center is raising concerns over persistent air conditioning failures that have created uncomfortable and potentially hazardous conditions for employees and shoppers alike. According to staff, the issue has persisted for weeks, with temperatures inside the store reaching unbearable levels.
The lack of proper climate control has led to complaints of dizziness, fatigue, and dehydration among workers. "It's not just about comfort—it's a health and safety issue," said a store representative, who wished to remain anonymous. "We’ve had customers leave because they couldn’t tolerate the heat, and our team is struggling to work under these conditions."
The store, which supports community programs through its sales, has reportedly attempted to address the issue with mall management but claims repairs have been delayed. Some speculate that the aging infrastructure of the shopping center may be contributing to the problem.
Representatives from MacArthur Center acknowledged the concerns but stated that maintenance teams are working to resolve the issue. "We prioritize the well-being of all tenants and visitors," a spokesperson said. "However, HVAC repairs in large facilities can sometimes take time due to the complexity of the systems."
Meanwhile, the thrift store has resorted to temporary measures, including portable fans and extended breaks for employees, to mitigate the heat.
Shoppers have expressed sympathy for the store’s plight, with some calling for quicker action. "This is a valuable resource for the community," said a regular customer. "It’s disappointing to see a nonprofit struggling because of something as basic as air conditioning."
