After Weathering Three Hurricanes, This Family Decides It's Time to Say Goodbye to Florida

The Dawsons' Journey: From Ohio Dreams to Hurricane Nightmares in Cape Coral

For many, the allure of Florida's sun-soaked beaches and vibrant lifestyle is a dream come true. The Dawsons, a family from Ohio, took the plunge in April 2022, trading their life in Cleveland for the coastal charm of Cape Coral, Florida. But, as they soon discovered, the beautiful weather comes with its own set of challenges.

A Dream Turned Stormy Reality

When the Dawsons made their move, they sought the quintessential "fun in the sun" lifestyle. Rob Dawson recalls, "We weren't sure where we were gonna move in Florida, but we knew we wanted Southwest Florida on the coast. So we ended up here in Cape Coral." However, their dreams were soon overshadowed by the harsh realities of hurricane season.

The Impact of Hurricane Ian

Just five months after settling into their new home, Hurricane Ian struck, wreaking havoc on the area. Rob shared, "After Ian, things really went downhill for us. Our house got damaged extremely badly. We fought insurance for over a year before we finally got a little bit of money. So we were already in a little bit of trouble at that point.”

Lessons Learned: Evacuation Plans for Future Storms

Despite the challenges faced in the wake of Hurricane Ian, the Dawsons were determined to adapt. As 2023 unfolded without major incident, they braced themselves for 2024, when hurricanes Helene and Milton were on the radar. This time, Rob and his family made a pivotal decision: they would not ride out the storm at home.

Facing the Storm Together

  • Community Pressure: "The neighbors were all staying, so we decided to stay," Rob reflected. Looking back, he wished they had evacuated.
  • Preparedness: "So I told my wife the next time we have a major hurricane like this, we’re evacuating." His resolve reflects the lessons learned from their harrowing experience.

Returning to Ohio: A New Chapter

As they faced the imminent threat of Hurricane Milton, the Dawsons made a tough choice: to return to Ohio. Rob expressed, "Yeah, it's gonna be great. I mean, I was a lifelong Ohio resident, so I'm used to snowstorms and blizzards. But for 2.5 years, we've either been worried about hurricanes or dealing with them, and it just takes a toll on you." This decision marks a significant shift in their journey, trading hurricanes for winter storms.

Final Thoughts: Strength in Community

As the Dawsons hunker down during Hurricane Milton, Rob concluded with a message of resilience, saying, "Floridians are strong, and just keep everybody in your prayers." Their story is a poignant reminder of the challenges many face when pursuing a dream in the Sunshine State.
