Alaska state officials are feeling the heat as they strive to improve the efficiency of their investigations into police-involved shootings. The public is demanding the swift release of body camera footage related to these incidents.
Since the beginning of the year, officers have been involved in nine shooting incidents, resulting in the deaths of six individuals. Five of these shootings involved the Anchorage police department.
During a recent press briefing, Deputy Attorney General John Skidmore addressed the issue, stating that the release of body camera footage should follow a thorough investigation by the state's Office of Special Prosecutions to ensure due process. However, Skidmore also acknowledged that these investigations are taking longer than expected.
Currently, the state is reviewing eight police shootings, including one from November of the previous year, to determine the justification of the use of force. Delays are attributed to waiting for ballistic reports, police reports, and autopsies.
To expedite the process, the Office of Special Prosecutions has increased its number of prosecutors from three to seven and is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to streamline the information flow.
Despite calls for transparency from the community, Skidmore emphasized the importance of balancing transparency with safeguarding individuals' due process rights.
