SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Authorities are searching for a gunman who opened fire on a construction crane operator in a brazen daylight shooting. The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon at a residential development site in the city's bustling Galloway Village area.
According to police reports, the crane operator was inside the cab, approximately 30 feet in the air, when an unidentified individual shot at the heavy machinery. The suspect fired multiple rounds, with at least one bullet penetrating the cab's glass and striking the operator in the arm.
Despite the injury, the operator demonstrated remarkable composure. He managed to safely lower the massive crane to the ground under his own power before exiting the vehicle to seek help. First responders transported him to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been treated and released.
"This was not a random act. The suspect specifically targeted the crane and its operator," stated a police spokesperson during a briefing. "The motive remains unclear, and we are pursuing all leads."
The shooting prompted a significant police response, closing a portion of Lone Pine Avenue for several hours as investigators processed the scene. Crime scene technicians collected ballistic evidence and canvassed the area for surveillance footage from nearby businesses and homes.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as construction workers scrambled for safety upon hearing the gunfire. The suspect reportedly fled on foot into a nearby wooded area, evading an initial search by officers.
Police have not released a detailed description of the shooter but confirm they are following up on several persons of interest. The investigation is being treated as an aggravated assault. Authorities are urging anyone with information, including dashcam or doorbell camera footage from the vicinity, to come forward.
