Tempe, Arizona
Tempe is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, and according to the Census Bureau, it will have 180,587 residents in 2020. The Greek Valley of Tempe inspired the naming of the city. Tempe is a suburb of Phoenix that is part of the East Valley region; it is surrounded on the west by Phoenix and Guadalupe, on the north by Scottsdale and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Native Community, on the south by Chandler, and on the east by Mesa. Arizona State University's main campus is also located in Tempe.
Geography
Between Phoenix's central business district and the remainder of the East Valley is the inner suburb of Tempe. Tempe has a rather dense, urbanized development pattern in the northern portion of the city, notably in connection to the Valley Metro Line, as a result of this and the fact that it is home to the main campus of Arizona State University. Lower-density office parks, single-family houses, and strip malls make up the development as it moves south.
Tempe's northern region is traversed by the Salt River, which is dammed in two locations to form Tempe Town Lake.
The landlocked city has a total area of 40.2 square miles (104 km2), of which 40.1 square miles (104 km2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) are water, according to the United States Census Bureau. Water makes up 0.32% of the total area, including Tempe Town Lake. Mesa to the east, Scottsdale and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Native Community to the north, Phoenix and Guadalupe to the west, and Chandler to the south are the cities that surround Tempe.
Tempe is mostly flat, with the exception of Tempe Butte or Hayden Butte (commonly referred to as A-Mountain due to Arizona State University's "A" logo located on its south face), which is next to Sun Devil Stadium, Twin Buttes, which is on Tempe's western edge, Bell Butte, which is on Tempe's northwest corner, and the buttes within Papago Park. Elevations at Tempe Town Lake and Hayden Butte range from 1,140 feet (350 m) to 1,495 feet (456 m), respectively.
