In a bittersweet announcement that has left many in Anchorage feeling nostalgic, Cafecito Bonito, a unique cafe known for its vibrant atmosphere and community-driven events, will be closing its doors in November. Since its inception in 2021, the cafe has been more than just a place to grab a drink; it has served as a cultural hub, hosting over 300 events that celebrate BIPOC, queer, and sober communities.
Owned by Estrella Rodriguez-Northcutt, Cafecito Bonito has offered a delightful array of beverages, from traditional favorites to innovative horchata lattes. Estrella's mission was to create a welcoming space for all ages, fostering inclusivity and connection among Anchorage residents. She believes in the power of community, stating:
“I mainly did it because I feel like the community in Anchorage is just so small. I wanted my customers to hear the news from me rather than through the grapevine.”
Cafecito Bonito has not only been a cafe but also a sanctuary for those seeking alcohol-free community events. Last year, the cafe was the center of a protest that ultimately brought the community closer together. Estrella reflects on the impact of her establishment:
Recently married, Estrella has decided to close the cafe to embrace a new chapter in her life. She announced the closure on Facebook, wanting the community to have a chance to say goodbye. While no firm closing date has been set, she anticipates the last day will be in mid-November.
Reflecting on her time in Anchorage, Estrella shared her journey:
“Back in my hometown, we didn’t have a queer culture. It’s been amazing to see people openly expressing themselves here. That’s how I fell in love with this community.”
As the cafe prepares to close, many locals are reminiscing about the connections they've made and the events they've attended. Cafecito Bonito will be missed, but its legacy of inclusivity and community spirit will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those it touched.
