What was once envisioned as a 1-million-square-foot speculative industrial building has transformed into a colossal near 1.2-million-square-foot customer service center, marking a significant milestone for Southwire. On August 22, the company inaugurated its new facility in Fort Worth's vibrant AllianceTexas. This state-of-the-art warehouse will not only serve as a hub for operations but will also integrate cutting-edge autonomous trucking technology to enhance logistics efficiency.
"We’re building a private bridge so those autonomous trucks will stay on private roads," said Ross Perot Jr., chairman of Hillwood, the firm behind the AllianceTexas development. This innovative approach will ensure seamless transportation between the new building and the nearby BNSF Alliance Intermodal facility, positioning Southwire at the forefront of industrial automation.
Initially, Hillwood constructed the facility on speculation, anticipating a demand for leasing. However, Southwire's need for a larger space became evident. "Most people don’t say 1 million square feet is too small," Perot noted. "But they needed more space." With Hillwood's in-house construction capabilities, the response was swift and effective.
Based in Carrollton, Georgia, Southwire is investing over $1.5 billion to modernize its operations, integrating new technologies and systems to boost efficiency and maintain competitive stature. Rich Stinson, Southwire’s president and CEO, emphasized the company’s substantial growth trajectory, stating, "We’re the biggest wire and cable company in North America." With a revenue of $8 billion in 2023, the company is poised for further expansion as the U.S. embraces electrification.
Stinson highlighted that, "Electrification is a big deal," and the new facility will cater to various segments, including commercial, residential, utility, and industrial markets, employing around 250 workers.
Hillwood recently announced plans for another speculative industrial building, Alliance Westport 14, covering 766,994 square feet. With several buildings under construction, they are likely to greenlight an additional 1-million-square-foot facility soon.
Perot remarked on the increasing ceiling heights in new constructions, designed to accommodate advanced inventory systems and drones. "Inside these buildings, you see drones flying," he explained, underscoring the ongoing technology revolution within the industrial sector.
The AllianceTexas Mobility Innovation Zone is instrumental in fostering innovative ideas, including autonomous trucking. "We want to go beyond the leading edge to the extreme, to explore what’s possible," Perot added. Such forward-thinking has the potential to attract visionary entrepreneurs and unique business proposals, which Southwire is keen to embrace.
The Southwire facility, designed by GSR Architects and financed by Citizens Bank, represents a significant leap in logistical capabilities within Fort Worth. As the industrial landscape evolves, residents can expect more groundbreaking developments that redefine the future of business operations.
