Operation Dry Water is an initiative aimed at educating recreational boaters about the dangers of boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. From July 4th through July 6th, the Operation Dry Water weekend will be recognized nationally in an effort to prevent boating under the influence. According to ODNR, boating under the influence is the leading contributing factor in recreational boater deaths and injuries. ODNR Director Mary Mertz stated, "We're here to promote essential safety practices like wearing life jackets and taking boater education courses. ODNR is dedicated to ensuring every boater has a safe and fun time. Stay sober, stay alert, and enjoy your time on the water." According to the release, boating safety advocates, volunteers, and law enforcement will be educating boaters on safe boating practices at marinas and on the water in every U.S. state and territory during the Operation Dry Water weekend. Participating law enforcement agencies will also be working to identify and remove dangerous and impaired operators. In 2023 alone, 717 impaired boaters were removed from waterways by law enforcement during Operation Dry Water weekend nationwide. Governor Mike DeWine stated, "Summer is here, and we want everyone to enjoy time on the water by keeping safety top of mind. By boating sober this holiday and the entire summer season, we can make sure everyone is able to enjoy their experience on Ohio's waterways."
