On Monday night, Kearny Mesa celebrated a momentous occasion as a striking new gateway sign was illuminated for the first time, heralding the Convoy District's vibrant cultural tapestry. In attendance were key figures including Mayor Todd Gloria, City Councilmember Kent Lee, former Councilmember Chris Cate, and several passionate community leaders.
This impressive 30-foot sign serves as a beacon, marking the Convoy District as a distinct cultural hub, akin to popular neighborhoods like North Park, Hillcrest, and Little Italy. What was once a modest collection of family-run businesses has blossomed into a prominent center of culinary, economic, and cultural activity.
Mayor Gloria expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This gateway sign for the Convoy District is not only a symbol of community identity and pride, but also represents the city’s desire to officially recognize and properly promote this vibrant and distinctive cultural district.”
The unveiling of this sign is part of a larger, multi-year initiative aimed at revitalizing the Convoy District. This area was designated as a Pan-Asian Cultural District in 2020, coinciding with updates to the Kearny Mesa Community Plan aimed at enhancing its cultural and economic landscape.
Jason Paguio, President and CEO of the Asian Business Association of San Diego, remarked, “We’re proud that Convoy now has a neighborhood sign, joining the ranks of San Diego’s unique and celebrated communities as we continue to grow and develop.”
For those curious to see this new landmark, the Convoy District sign is located at the intersection of Convoy and Opportunity Road in Kearny Mesa. It's a must-see for anyone interested in exploring the cultural richness of this vibrant neighborhood.
