Long Beach, California
California's Los Angeles County includes the city of Long Beach. With 466,742 residents as of 2020, it is the 42nd most populous city in the country. Long Beach, a charter city, is California's seventh-most populous city.
Long Beach, which was founded in 1897, is located in Southern California in Los Angeles County's southern region. Long Beach, which is a component of the Gateway Cities region, is located about 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Los Angeles. The Port of Long Beach is one of the biggest shipping ports in the world and the second busiest container port in the United States. The city sits over an oilfield with small wells both offshore and directly beneath it.
The Aquarium of the Pacific and the permanently moored RMS Queen Mary are two of the city's famous waterfront attractions. The Grand Prix of Long Beach, an IndyCar race, and the Long Beach Pride Festival and Parade are all held in Long Beach. Within the city is California State University, Long Beach, one of the biggest institutions in California in terms of enrolment.
Geography
The distance between downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach is around 20 miles (32 km). The city has a total area of 51.437 square miles (133.2 km2), of which 50.293 square miles (130.3 km2) is land and 1.144 square miles (2.96 km2) (2.22%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau. Signal Hill is totally encircled by Long Beach.
Climate
Either a hot, semi-arid climate or a hot, summer Mediterranean climate best describes the weather of Long Beach. The city typically experiences hot summers and mild to warm winters with sporadic rainfall. As is the case throughout Southern California, Long Beach experiences generally sunny days. 4.0 miles (6.4 km) inland from the beach, at the weather station at the Long Beach Airport, temperatures vary more widely than those near the coast. Low clouds and fog are common during the summer, developing overnight and covering the region on many mornings. By the afternoon, the fog usually clears, and a westerly sea wind frequently forms, keeping temperatures moderate. Summertime can occasionally be hot and humid, which can be uncomfortable due to the heat index.
The Los Angeles metropolitan area coastal communities to the northwest and southeast of Long Beach, which primarily have west faced coastlines, occasionally experience different weather patterns from the city due to its location directly east of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and its south facing coastline. The 1200-foot Palos Verdes hills obstruct most of the coastal moisture that characterizes other coastal cities like Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, and Newport Beach as well as west to east airflow.
The bulk of Long Beach's precipitation falls during the winter, as it does in the majority of Southern California localities. Rainfall from storms can be very heavy.

The economic foundation has evolved over time. A portion of the city budget is still supported by the boom that oil extraction produced. The biggest private employer in the city is remains Boeing, although having significantly reduced its local workforce in recent years.
