The county seat of Orange County, California, is Santa Ana, which translates to "Saint Anne" in Spanish. 310,227 people called Santa Ana home as of the 2020 census, making it the 13th-most populous city in California and the 64th-most densely populated large city in the country. When José Antonio Yorba received Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana from the Spanish governor of California in 1810, Santa Ana officially came into existence. The Yorba family rancho was expanded after the Mexican War of Independence, becoming to be one of the biggest and most valuable in the area and housing a diverse Californio community. The Seplveda family purchased the rancho after the American Conquest of California, but they later lost their title to the area. William H. Spurgeon later acquired the rancho and formally established Santa Ana in 1869.

After being established in Santa Ana in 1912, the then-Glenn L. Martin Company—a forerunner to Lockheed Martin—merged with the Wright Company in 1916.
With the Irvine Business District being close to John Wayne Airport, the neighbouring city of Irvine has recently overtaken Santa Ana in business growth. By a margin greater than the county average of 57.7%, it voted in favor of Proposition 8, the California amendment that defines marriage as a civil union between a man and a woman. Santa Ana voted 62.0% in favor of Proposition 4, which would have changed the California Constitution to require that adolescents notify their parents before getting an abortion; the county as a whole only voted 54.3% in favor of the proposition.
