Camp Pendleton Marine sentenced for trying to entice a child into sexual activity


SAN DIEGO-- A U.S. Marine formerly stationed at Camp Pendleton was sentenced to over a years behind bars in a Florida court on Monday for attempting to entice a child online to participate in sex, federal prosecutors said.

Lance Cpl. Schyular Quinton Willis, 24, pleaded guilty to the charge in January, a number of months after his arrest at Camp Pendleton.

The charges originate from a series of text messages between Willis and a Jacksonville minor in between July 2023 and September 2023, according to the U.S. Attorney's workplace for the Middle District of Florida.

In the texts, sexual relations and the production of child sexual abuse product was discussed on numerous celebrations, district attorneys stated. Several naked pictures of Willis and the kid were likewise found by private investigators in the series of messages.

Authorities were first informed of the messages by the child's daddy on Oct. 1, 2023, with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office contacting the Naval Criminal Investigative Service quickly after Willis was recognized as an active-duty service member.

It was also identified Willis had access to the child and hung out with them while in Florida throughout a later conversation with their dad. According to federal district attorneys, among the earlier text messages appeared to reference possible sexual activity at some point in this period.

Willis was jailed on Oct. 10, 2023. Federal district attorneys said he "admitted to talking with [the kid] sexually which it was an error." He was sentenced to 17 years, six months in a federal prison.
