Celebrate with a Bang: Alamitos Bay's Spectacular Fireworks Show on Sept. 1! Don't Miss Out on Possibly the Last Big Event of its Kind!

Breaking Now News: Big Bang on the Bay Fireworks Show Officially Rescheduled for Labor Day Weekend

The annual Big Bang on the Bay fireworks show, which draws thousands of spectators, has been officially rescheduled for Labor Day weekend after being canceled over the Independence Day holiday. The California Coastal Commission recently approved a permit for the event, allowing the pyrotechnics display to light up the sky once again.

While this year's show is set to go on, the Coastal Commission expressed concerns about the environmental impact of the fireworks. They emphasized the need to find a non-explosive alternative for next year's event to minimize effects on birds, air quality, and water quality.

The show was initially canceled earlier this year due to a missed permit application deadline by the Boys & Girls Clubs, the new lead organizers. However, city officials rallied to secure approval for the rescheduled event on September 1st, with Coastal Commissioner Roberto Uranga advocating for its importance as a charity fundraiser.

Despite growing concerns about the environmental impact, many community members continue to support the Big Bang on the Bay fireworks show. This year's event will serve as a primary fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach and seven other charities, raising a total of $1.7 million for local nonprofits over the past decade.

The Coastal Development Permit approval for this year's event includes a stipulation for future permit applications, requiring submissions for any fireworks show beyond 2025 to be made by January 15th of the event year. The rigorous permitting process follows complaints about water quality issues and harm to migratory birds from previous shows.

Big Bang on the Bay Schedule

  • The fireworks display will begin around 9 p.m. on Sunday, September 1st, with pyrotechnics launched from a barge in Alamitos Bay.
  • Prior to the show, Boathouse on the Bay restaurant will host a block party starting at 4:30 p.m. at 190 North Marina Drive.
  • General admission tickets are $75, while kids under 10 can attend for $35, with all proceeds benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach.
  • The event will feature a DJ, aircraft flyovers, and a paragliding show over Alamitos Bay.

In addition to the fireworks display, a benefit concert featuring Jakob's Castle, led by Jakob Nowell, son of late Sublime lead singer Bradley Nowell, will take place on August 31st at Boathouse on the Bay. Concert proceeds will support the Nowell Family Foundation and addiction recovery services.

What do you think?

  • Should fireworks shows like Big Bang on the Bay be reevaluated for their environmental impact?
  • Is it worth continuing traditional events like fireworks displays despite potential harm?
  • Should alternative, non-explosive forms of entertainment be considered for future celebrations?
