Angela Susan “Susie” Thurston was a radiant spirit who had an unyielding passion for beauty and fashion. Her journey in the fashion world was fueled by a simple yet powerful mission: to discover stunning pieces that would inspire and delight her “beautiful customers,” as her friend Gayle Hill, owner of Maverick Fine Western Wear, fondly described. With a keen eye for style, Susie created magic with everything from jewelry and bags to boots, clothing, and home goods.
Thurston, who served as a key member of the team at the Stockyards boutique for many years, made a significant impact with her unique ability to curate merchandise that spoke to the hearts of her customers. Sadly, she passed away at the age of 61 on October 19 after a courageous battle with cancer. Her friends, family, and loyal customers will forever cherish the joy and enthusiasm she brought to every interaction.
Born on January 2, 1963, in Cleburne, Texas, Susie was the daughter of Sonny and Myrna Thurston. After graduating from Covington High School in 1981, she moved to Dallas to pursue her dreams in art and design at Wade College, originally known as Miss Wade’s Fashion Merchandising College. In 1989, she joined Maverick Fine Western Wear, where her remarkable talent quickly set a new standard in Western retail.
John Proffitt, owner of the John Proffitt Home furniture store, noted that she was an inspiration for the Stockyards and a driving force behind Maverick's astronomical success, attributing much of it to her dedication and talent.
While fashion was a primary focus, Susie found joy in decorating her home, always ensuring it reflected the season. She was a warm and gentle person, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met. "She was one of the sweetest people I've ever met," Proffitt remarked, highlighting her kindness and professionalism.
Thurston is survived by her sister Debbie Reagan and her husband Lyle; her nephew Thomas Fielding Reagan and his wife Claire; great niece Rory Claire Reagan; daughter Whitney Hilton and her husband Josh; grandson Gus; stepson Wills Ward and his wife Emily; and godson George Louden. Memorial services were held on October 23 at First Baptist Church in Cleburne, followed by a private burial at Rosehill Cemetery.
A memorial event will take place at Maverick on January 23, 2025, at River Ranch Stockyards from 5 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Thurston requested donations be made to an animal shelter of choice, a testament to her love for animals.
