CHINO - - The first win for the Chino softball team Thursday was playing the game as set up despite heavy rain the previous night and once again at midday.
The other win was available in definite fashion on the field.
In a CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs first-round game, the Cowgirls scored in every inning and routed Paloma Valley 11-1 in a video game stopped with no outs in the bottom of the 6th inning due to the mercy rule.
Chino (13-14-1) will play top-seeded Burbank Burroughs or Buena in the 2nd round Tuesday.
'" Offensively, what we did well was we hit all through the lineup," Chino coach Daniella Ochoa said. "Every single kid had a hit, every single kid was on base at some point. Which's what we've been preaching the entire time, is that it takes the entire team."
Paloma Valley beginning pitcher
Madison Leyva struggled with control, enabling an unearned run in the very first inning after a walk, a hit batter, a double steal and a tossing error. After she strolled the first 2 batters of the 2nd inning, Nelson replaced her in the circle with Hadley Pettit,
The very first 4 batters reached base against Pettit: a double by Mayah Larenas followed by singles by Sammie Juarez, Savannah Felix and Angie Ortiz, putting Chino securely in control with a 6-0 lead.
While the offense was spread throughout the lineup, 2 players were ideal on the day. Felix, the No. 9 hitter, was 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs and No. 5 player A.J. Kuhns-Vasquez was 2 for 2 with a walk, two runs and an RBI.
It was lots of offense for Chino pitcher Priscilla Contreras, who tossed a five-hitter, strolled one, struck one and struck out eight. The only run she permitted was on Abigail Rogers' home run with one out in the fourth inning.
" My curveball was working the most. I was spinning it a lot today," Contreras stated.
It was a frustrating end to the season for Paloma Valley (7-11), which went back to the playoffs after losing out last year.
" We've got three or four freshmen who've never ever been to a CIF game before," Paloma Valley coach William Nelson stated. "The biggest thing is, they got to see the (CIF) competition. We're going to have eight areas open next year. Women that saw this need to be leaders and lead by example. It's going to be a younger team next year."
Prior to the video game, Ochoa was identified to get the video game in, in spite of field conditions that were initially unplayable.
" My son plays baseball (for Chino) and I never get to enjoy the baseball games," Ochoa stated. If you inform me I'm going to play, then I'm going to play."
Chino staff and trainees worked relentlessly on getting the dirt infield prepared and did so to the approval of the umpires and Nelson.
"The field conditions turned out to be a lot better than when we first got here," Nelson stated.
