As heavy rainfall pounded the Piedmont Triad region, a husband and wife found themselves in a life-threatening situation when floodwaters rapidly submerged their vehicle near the Haw River. The couple managed to escape by swimming to higher ground, narrowly avoiding disaster.
Emergency responders reported that water levels rose swiftly due to continuous downpours, turning low-lying roads into impassable waterways. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with debris and strong currents complicating rescue efforts.
"We saw their car get swept off the road," said a nearby resident. "It was terrifying—they barely made it out in time."
Local authorities deployed search teams along the riverbanks, urging residents to avoid flooded areas. Rescuers emphasized the unpredictability of flash floods, which can overwhelm vehicles within seconds.
The couple, whose names have not been released, recounted their struggle against the rushing water. "One minute we were driving, the next we were fighting for our lives," the husband told BNN. "We swam as hard as we could—it was sheer luck we made it."
Meteorologists predict more rain in the coming days, raising concerns about additional flooding.
