Cracking down on sidetracked driving

Cracking down on sidetracked driving

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - - You might see more state police on the roadways this month. They're cracking down on distracted motorists as part of Distracted Chauffeur Awareness Month.

Corey Miller likes to practice safe driving practices whenever he supports the wheel of a cars and truck.

" I'm a nurse. When you do sidetracked driving, I've seen what takes place. I'm good," described the 27-year-old from Buffalo.

But, according to New York State Trooper James O'Callaghan, a number of us are distracted on the roadways. He stated distracted driving is the 2nd most typical factor to auto accident, only behind speeding. O'Callaghan stated they tend to see it most with teen chauffeurs who have less experience on the roadway.

" 77% of teen chauffeurs believe that they can drive sidetracked securely and that is clearly a worrying number," he said.

Professionals recommend putting your phone in a safe location like the glove compartment or the trunk of your vehicle to prevent a prospective diversion. It's also recommended you limit the variety of travelers in your cars and truck, prevent eating or changing the radio station while driving, and pull over if you're tired.

In New York, motorists can not use portable cell phones or other electronic devices while driving. Reading or sending texts, talking to others, playing video games, taking images, or doing anything else on a cell phone can result in a ticket.
