In a shocking incident that has left the Salinas community reeling, a fatal hit-and-run occurred near the Foods Co. grocery store on Alisal Street. The authorities are actively pursuing the investigation, and while a suspect has been arrested, concerns about pedestrian safety are growing.
According to police reports, the emergency call came in around 8:32 PM on Wednesday night. Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene as they witnessed the unfortunate event unfold.
The Salinas Police Department acted swiftly, locating the suspect’s vehicle on North Sanborn Road near Elkington Street. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, which showed visible damage to the front right side.
Although the driver did not appear to be under the influence at the time, a blood analysis is pending to confirm the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The driver has been identified as Jorge Luis López Saenz, 27 years old. He has been booked into the Monterey County Jail, facing charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license, among other offenses.
Witnesses of the tragic event shared their harrowing experiences, recounting the sounds of screeching tires and the horrifying impact. Many in the community have voiced their concerns regarding pedestrian safety in the area, highlighting that certain zones lack proper crosswalks or traffic lights, increasing the risk for walkers.
In light of recent events, Telemundo Costa Central reached out to René Méndez, the City Manager of Salinas. He mentioned that upcoming plans, dubbed "Alisal Vibrancy," aim to improve pedestrian infrastructure on Alisal Street by incorporating new crosswalks and safety measures.
