The festival celebrates more than just a day of fun; it marks a resurgence of Bergen Square as a cultural hub. With new trees, seating, and pedestrian-friendly enhancements, the square is stepping into its new role as a community nexus, reminiscent of its historic past.
Local historian James Dievler shared, “This event will renew and re-establish Bergen Square as an important historical and cultural destination.” Once home to the indigenous Lenni Lenape people and later the first European settlement in New Jersey, Bergen Square has long been a melting pot of cultures and traditions.
Chris Bernardo, administrator of the Journal Square Special Improvement District, highlighted the importance of creating safe and active public spaces for residents and visitors alike. “We’re proud to partner with local organizations to underscore the rich history of Journal Square, as we work together to build a great future for current and future stakeholders,” he stated.
Mark your calendars and prepare to immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Jersey City's history and culture. The New Historic Bergen Square festival promises to be a day of joy, community, and celebration!
