The beloved Yo Mama's restaurant is making waves in downtown Birmingham with its new location, and fans are buzzing with anticipation! Located at Parking Deck #3, directly across from the Harbert Center on 4th Avenue North, this expansion promises to elevate your dining experience. We recently caught up with co-owners Denise and Crystal Peterson to get the inside scoop on what to expect.
In May 2023, the Birmingham City Council unanimously approved the redevelopment of a long-vacant retail space at Parking Deck #3, paving the way for Yo Mama's to relocate. This move not only brings a larger venue but also revives a space that had been dormant for nearly twenty years, making it a significant milestone for the community.
If you’ve ever visited the original 2nd Avenue location, you know how cozy it can get with a seating capacity of just 36. The new Yo Mama's will accommodate up to 100 guests, offering a more relaxed atmosphere where you can truly savor your meal.
Crystal Peterson shares, “We’re focused on giving you a real experience. The old location felt rushed—now, we can create a vibe that makes you feel like you’re at my mom's house.”
One of the most significant upgrades at the new location is easily accessible parking. The previous 2nd Avenue site only offered on-street parking, which became a hassle during peak hours. The new venue provides the first hour free in a spacious parking area directly above the restaurant.
The new Yo Mama's will also feature private meeting rooms capable of seating up to 30 people. This flexibility allows the space to host various events, from city meetings to family celebrations.
Fans of Yo Mama's can breathe a sigh of relief; the menu will remain largely unchanged. Denise and Crystal assure diners that while they’ll introduce daily specials (including a potential fish sandwich), the classic home-cooked meals you love will still be served.
While the new location is close to completion, an official opening date has yet to be announced. The owners are also planning to introduce an exciting new concept for evening dining at their original 2nd Avenue location, promising even more delicious options for Birmingham residents.
As Crystal Peterson expresses, “Birmingham is big enough to matter and small enough to care.” This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the community spirit that Yo Mama's aims to foster.
