At the heart of this lively scene was the grand opening of the Child Care Studio at Riverside, a groundbreaking early childhood education center designed to reconnect children with nature, allowing them to truly be kids.

Why Outdoor Play Matters

According to Leslie Fierro, the center's director, the outdoor play area serves a purpose beyond mere fun.

• Exploration: Children engage with various materials, stimulating all five senses.
• Learning: Activities like making mud pies and playing in the sandbox offer invaluable lessons about the world around them.

“You’re really allowing them to experience,” Fierro stated, emphasizing the educational value of letting kids play freely.

A Community Initiative

This innovative center is part of a larger initiative by the city of Fort Worth and the Blue Ribbon Action Committee on Child Care. Created in 2022, this committee has already secured $45 million in federal pandemic relief funds to enhance early childhood education.

Future plans include:

Mayor Mattie Parker believes that Fort Worth can set a national example in early childhood education. "I'm fully convinced that Fort Worth can be an example for the rest of the country," she remarked during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Child Care Studio isn't about traditional classroom settings filled with desks. Instead, it fosters an environment of creativity and personal expression. Kara Waddell, CEO of Child Care Associates, explained, “A studio is a great place for expression and learning. You should expect to find children at play.”

Embracing Nature

Nestled among trees along the Trinity River, the center’s design prioritizes nature. Three outdoor play areas cater to different age groups:

• Toddlers and Pre-K: Two areas overlook the river.
• Infants: A separate space tucked between a fence and the building.

The location not only provides a safe haven for learning but also emphasizes the importance of quality child care for Fort Worth's youngest residents, according to City Council member Jeanette Martinez.

Creating a Nurturing Environment

Inside, the design features soft, nature-inspired colors rather than bright, primary hues, creating a calming atmosphere conducive to learning. Waddell noted, “The colors are muted to inspire students to express themselves in whatever way they want.”

Embracing the Outdoors

As city officials gathered under a large shady tree, children dashed around, fully immersed in their exploration. Brendan McGuire, a regional president at PNC Bank, observed a child excitedly pulling a worm from the ground, embodying the essence of outdoor learning.

“That’s the importance of outdoor classrooms,” McGuire remarked, underscoring the unique experiences such environments provide.
