In a remarkable journey that intertwines education and cultural immersion, eleven students from Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District recently embarked on a two-week adventure in the historic city of Salamanca, Spain. This unique study abroad program has opened new horizons for these young learners, allowing them to experience firsthand the deep-rooted history and vibrant culture of one of Spain's most iconic cities.
“It was an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience,” exclaimed Daniela Yzaguirre, a 17-year-old senior at Harlingen High School South. Daniela, along with her classmates, engaged in a transformative experience that included both language instruction and cultural awareness classes at the prestigious University of Salamanca, founded in 1218.
Salamanca is a city steeped in history, and the students could feel the weight of it everywhere they turned. From the ancient Roman bridge spanning the Tormes River to the stunning architecture resembling a grand castle, the city was a living museum. “Remember the bridge?” Robert Villarreal, another senior, said referring to the Roman bridge that has stood since the first century A.D.
The students quickly noticed stark contrasts between the culinary traditions of Spain and those they were familiar with in South Texas and Mexico. Robert pointed out the popular empanadas, humorously discussing the unique fillings they encountered. “There was cheese and bacon, and they had their own names for flavors,” he said, highlighting the variety of tastes in Spanish cuisine.
Language played a crucial role in their experience as well. Gavin Gonzalez, the most fluent Spanish speaker in the group, noted the differences in phrases and terminology. “They say ‘Vale’ when something is good, which I had never heard before,” he shared, illustrating how language reflects culture.
This program marks the inaugural year for the Harlingen school district's Study Abroad initiative, a collaboration aimed at providing students with global learning experiences. Superintendent J.A. Gonzalez emphasized the importance of such programs in preparing students for a diverse world. “This not only broadens our students’ educational horizons but also helps them become culturally aware individuals,” he stated.
As the students reflect on their journey, the history of Salamanca continues to evolve, promising new adventures and learning experiences for future groups from Harlingen. The transformative power of education knows no bounds, and these students have returned not just with memories but with a broader understanding of the world around them.
