El Dorado County supervisors have taken a bold stand against California Assembly Bill 1037, a proposed law that would expand access to drug treatment programs while reducing penalties for possession. The unanimous 5-0 vote to formally oppose the bill highlights growing tensions between local governments and state legislators over California's approach to drug policy.
AB 1037, introduced by Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D-Los Angeles), proposes significant changes to how California handles drug offenses:
"This is about protecting our community's values," said District 3 Supervisor Wendy Thomas. "We've seen how similar policies have played out in San Francisco and we refuse to let that happen here."
District 5 Supervisor Brooke Laine added, "While we support treatment options, we can't ignore the public safety impacts. This bill goes too far in decriminalizing dangerous behaviors."
