ELYRIA, Ohio (BNN) – – The mission to honor guts led to the story of an American hero.
" By far the greatest person is somebody who compromised their lives for their nation, securing flexibility and democracy all over the world," stated Larry Amato, deputy director of Lorain County Veterans Service Commission.
The Lorain County Veterans Service Commission will host an honorary street sign devotion event at 10 a.m. on April 5 for Second Lieutenant Ferrier White, a Tuskegee airman eliminated throughout World War II in 1945.
" The Tuskegee Airmen and their story, barriers they broke and what they brought to the war itself, it's a really, really happy group," stated Amato. "It was the very first of their kind, having that in our county and the city of Elyria, I believe it's something we can be significantly proud of."
White matured in Elyria at the corner of South Maple Street and Oberlin Road, where the event will take place. A forgotten fact gave the attention of the county veterans commission by the Elyria Black Legacy Connection, a not-for-profit.
" We have all been robbed from hearing these extraordinary stories of Black contributions to our society and Elyria is no exception to that," said Ethan West, the founder of the not-for-profit. "So we wanted to bring Black citizens into the full story of Elyria's story and Second Lt. Ferrier White belongs to that story."
