For first-generation college students, the journey into higher education can often feel daunting. Suzana Delgado-Gray, the Chief Operations Officer of Girls Inc. of Tarrant County, emphasizes the importance of community and support systems in this transformative phase. “Having those resources available from day one before you get here on campus is so critical to that girl’s success,” she stated.
In a groundbreaking collaboration, Girls Inc. of Tarrant County and Texas Wesleyan University have come together to enhance college readiness among young women. On November 6, 2024, the organizations signed an agreement aimed at providing vital support to girls as they prepare to embark on their college journeys.
Jennifer Limas, the CEO of Girls Inc. of Tarrant County, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership’s potential to equip girls with necessary skills and resources. “It will allow us to equip girls with what they need to not just succeed but to thrive when they reach college,” Limas noted. The initiative aims to follow alumni and identify the most beneficial resources for current students.
Delgado-Gray highlighted the significance of exposure for these young women, stating, “Many of our girls don’t step out of their ZIP codes and don’t step out of their communities. So, it’s the fact that they can see something that’s close to home, come to a campus, and make that realization, not just read about it or hear about it, but experience it.”
This partnership not only paves the way for academic success but also bridges the gap between community support and the educational landscape. With initiatives like this, the hope is that more young women will feel empowered to pursue their dreams and achieve their full potential.
