As the tech landscape faces unprecedented challenges, including layoffs and evolving job markets, a dynamic organization based in Denver is stepping up to ensure that Latinas are not just participants but leaders in this transformative industry. Latinas in Tech, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has established a robust chapter in Colorado, growing its community to over 400 members in just a few short years.
Latinas in Tech is dedicated to fostering connections among its members, providing essential resources for professional development, and creating a supportive network for women navigating the tech world. The organization offers:
Aimara Rodriguez, a leader within the Denver chapter, emphasizes the importance of representation and community. "You need to be able to see yourself in certain places and spaces," she asserts. "Having a community where you can share your challenges is crucial." Rodriguez, who has been in the tech industry for over a decade, reflects on her early career experiences, often being the only woman and Latina in the room.
“If I don’t see myself in this room, I’m going to make sure I can be an example for others,” she adds. Now an entrepreneur, Rodriguez is committed to mentoring those seeking to navigate their own paths in tech.
Thalía Giraldo's journey is a testament to the impact of Latinas in Tech. After completing a data analytics boot camp, she connected with the organization shortly after moving to Denver. This connection ultimately led her to a role as a data analyst at the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
"Once I applied, Latinas in Tech completely advocated for me," Giraldo shares. "I believe in community 100%, especially in communities of color and their ability to advocate for each other." Her transition to tech was challenging, but with the support from Latinas in Tech, she successfully navigated the job market.
Giraldo’s experience highlights a crucial aspect of the tech industry—diversity. "They made an intentional choice to post the job on their job board, showing they care about making their staff reflect the communities they serve," she explains. Throughout the hiring process, she received coaching on articulating how her diverse background and newly acquired technical skills could add value to her prospective employer.
Latinas in Tech continues to grow, welcoming new members while encouraging seasoned professionals to step up as mentors. Rodriguez expresses her pride in building a community that empowers Latinas to envision themselves as capable leaders in tech.
As Latinas in Tech expands its reach, it invites anyone interested in fostering diversity and inclusion in technology to get involved. The organization aims to help women see themselves in roles they may have never considered and to support them in achieving their career aspirations.
