In an unprecedented move, the Haines Borough Assembly has rolled out its first-ever cruise passenger fee, a decision that promises to reshape the local tourism landscape. Set against the backdrop of Haines being dubbed the “adventure capital,” this new tariff is not just a financial measure but a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the community’s infrastructure and visitor experience.
Reba Hylton, the town's tourism director, highlighted the significance of this fee, noting that Haines has never imposed a passenger fee despite expecting around 100,000 cruise ship visitors this year alone. Hylton expressed her concern regarding the lack of funds for necessary dock maintenance, which prompted the need for this new revenue source.
“We didn’t have a fee at all, which raised a big red flag for me,” Hylton stated. “When you want to know how to maintain and improve things, having no dedicated funds makes it challenging.”
The journey toward implementing this tariff began six months ago and involved extensive discussions across various committees, including the Tourism Advisory Board and Ports and Harbor. Hylton emphasized that the proposal underwent rigorous vetting and consideration before its unanimous approval by the Assembly.
This tariff marks a pivotal moment for Haines, as it seeks to bolster its infrastructure while providing a better experience for visitors. The initiative reflects a growing trend among tourist destinations to implement sustainable practices that not only enhance the visitor experience but also preserve the local environment and community resources.
