The City of Bellevue is making waves in the entrepreneurial landscape with its newly launched 15-week accelerator program, aimed at empowering small business owners and innovators throughout Eastside communities. Kicking off on September 30, 2024, this initiative is a part of Startup 425, a regional collaboration designed to boost entrepreneurship in the area.
The inaugural group of this program includes an impressive cohort of 37 entrepreneurs, with at least five founders representing each of the partner cities. Here’s what the accelerator offers:
This program is designed to deliver training comparable to that of Silicon Valley, ensuring participants are well-equipped to take their businesses to the next level.
Thanks to generous funding from the Port of Seattle and Amazon, this accelerator program comes at no cost to participants. Entrepreneurs can acquire critical business insights without worrying about fees or surrendering equity in their companies. Mayor Lynne Robinson emphasizes the city’s commitment to innovation through collaboration, stating, “Bellevue believes in innovation through collaboration, and the city has taken a partnership approach to supporting startups.”
Levi Reed, the program coordinator and resident entrepreneur at Startup 425, highlights the initiative’s focus on underrepresented communities. “About 35% of the cohort consists of small business founders focused on targeting an underserved niche,” Reed explains. Many of these entrepreneurs often rely on self-funding or debt to establish their businesses, making the accelerator's support crucial for their growth.
Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Komal Kashiramka, a resident of Redmond and founder of an automated roti-maker company, shared her experience: “The accelerator’s environment has fostered focus and accountability. I’ve already gained significant value from the one-minute hot seat pitch practice.”
With an impressive 170 entrepreneurs applying for the first cohort, Bellevue plans to scale the program to accommodate even more aspiring business owners in the future.
