Unlocking Futures: A Freshman Academy Revolutionizes Career Exploration at West High School

In an exciting new initiative, West High School has introduced the Freshman Academy Career Exploration class, aimed at providing students with a clearer path toward their future careers. Led by history and government teacher Stephen Rosser, this course is the first step in the district's ambitious "Academies of Anchorage" program, designed to enhance graduation rates by integrating career-focused education into the curriculum.

The Game of Life: A Unique Assignment

One of the first assignments in this innovative class involved students creating a personalized game board inspired by the classic "Game of Life." Using colored construction paper and markers, students illustrated their long-term life goals and identified potential obstacles they may encounter along the way. This creative exercise not only fosters critical thinking but also encourages students to reflect on their aspirations.

“When I was a kid, one of my best friends had cancer. I saw her go through everything, and it made me really interested in it, and want to help kids like her.”

The Freshman Academy is not just an isolated course; it serves as a foundation for three additional years of specialized career classes tailored to each student's interests. The Anchorage School Board approved the launch of this initiative to better prepare students for their future, addressing the common question educators hear: "Why do I have to learn this?"

Rosser emphasized the importance of soft skills in the curriculum, stating:

“All teachers want to teach our kids soft skills as we go. This whole class is basically about soft skills, and that’s really exciting.”

Career Pathways and Future Opportunities

Next year, students will choose from nine different pathways across three academies: Business and Leadership, Science and Health, and Construction and Innovation. While the program is designed to provide focused career education, students have the option to opt out after their freshman year, a decision that some students, like Micah Lieb, appreciate:

“I don’t really know what I want to do with my life yet, so I think I want to get a more general education that could help me in whatever I decide to do.”

Field Trips and Real-World Connections

To further enhance the learning experience, the school plans to organize field trips that will expose students to various careers available in Anchorage. Assistant Principal Nicole Smith believes these connections will help students understand the relevance of their education:

“It’s a big lift, but I’m excited about the class. It’ll give students a better connection to why they’re in high school in the first place.”
