In an unexpected twist for residents of Socorro, Texas, a swarm of red flour beetles has invaded homes, prompting urgent action from local crews. Starting today, a significant cleanup operation will commence in El Paso’s lower valley to address this unusual infestation, which has left many households grappling with unwanted guests.
So, what exactly is drawing these pesky beetles into homes? According to experts, the culprit is none other than discarded pecan shells, which have become a prime food source for the beetles. Dr. Robert Puckett, an extension entomologist at Texas A&M University, emphasizes that removing these shells is a crucial step toward alleviating the beetle problem.
Dr. Puckett, who has over 20 years of experience in entomology, shared his insights during a recent visit to Socorro. “This is only the second time I’ve seen this happen in my 20 years,” he noted. “Last year, a similar situation arose in another Texas city due to discarded almond shells.” He predicts that, once the pecan shells are removed, residents will likely see a rapid decline in beetle numbers.
Crews will begin removing the pecan shells today, but residents should be prepared for a temporary spike in beetle activity during the process. As the beetles are agitated from their nests in the shells, they might venture into nearby homes in search of new food sources.
To minimize the impact of the infestation, Dr. Puckett advises residents to take the following precautions:
The cleanup is expected to span about a week or more, but hope is on the horizon. “You’re at the end of a long journey,” Dr. Puckett assured the community. “There’s going to be a little bit of residual time as we eliminate the source of the population, but relief is near.”
In light of the infestation, the county has allocated $25,000 in assistance for residents affected by the beetle crisis, providing much-needed relief during this challenging time.
