In a heartwarming story of courage and determination, Maria Compian, a resident of San Benito, is making waves at Texas State Technical College (TSTC) as she embarks on a new career path in Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This journey was sparked by the recent graduation of her two sons from the Electrical Lineworker and Management Technology program, igniting a flame in her to pursue a long-held dream.
Maria always had a passion for the medical field but lacked the confidence to pursue it until now. Inspired by her sons' achievements, she decided it was time to break out of her comfort zone. “I have always liked the medical field but didn’t have the courage to do it,” she shared. “After my adult sons graduated, I figured why not try it?”
Maria’s journey as a nontraditional student has not deterred her; instead, it has empowered her. She appreciates the supportive environment at TSTC, where instructors recognize her dedication and efforts. “The instructors are patient and help me because I’m older than the other students,” she stated. “They are aware of the effort I put forth because I want to have a good career.”
Maria is thoroughly enjoying her first semester, especially the hands-on assignments. One memorable task involved moving a medical manikin from a stretcher to an ambulance simulator, where students had to assess the situation and decide on the appropriate care. Her instructor, Ede Flores, praised her maturity and eagerness to learn.
With her EMT certificate in sight, Maria has set her eyes on higher goals. “After I complete the EMT certificate, my goal is to strive for the Paramedic program,” she said. TSTC offers a variety of programs, including an Associate of Applied Science degree in Paramedic and certificates in Advanced EMT and Paramedic across its campuses.
Registration for TSTC’s spring semester starts on October 28. If you’re interested in pursuing a rewarding career in EMS, visit tstc.edu for more information.
