The U.S. House Budget Committee has ignited a firestorm by advancing a Republican proposal to slash Medicaid funding by $625 billion over the next decade while imposing strict work requirements. The move, framed by supporters as fiscal responsibility, has drawn fierce opposition from healthcare advocates who warn it could strip coverage from vulnerable Americans.
Supporters argue the changes will "restore dignity through work" while curbing entitlement spending. "This plan encourages self-sufficiency and targets resources to those truly in need," said Committee Chair Jodey Arrington (R-TX).
Opponents counter that the cuts will devastate rural hospitals and harm disabled beneficiaries. "These are brutal cuts disguised as reform," retorted Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA), ranking Democrat on the committee.
The bill faces an uphill battle in the Senate, where moderate Republicans have expressed reservations. Analysts suggest the work requirements may violate Biden administration rules, setting up a legal showdown.
