Guns, Taxes and Health Care

2A HORSELESS CARRIAGES

Happy National Wear Orange Weekend (very first weekend in June.) How might our world function today, had the "horseless carriage" been developed concurrent with the establishment of our Bill of Rights?

The Second Amendment would possibly have actually included the tool-- in addition to guns-- of vehicle transport as an inalienable right: essential for the movement of militias in a more timely and effective method. And the right of residents to utilize this tool "will not be infringed," would check out the text of that 2A.

Naturally, no infringement would entail what is now the case for guns: no requirement for licenses, registration of the tool, or liability insurance-- and such overbearing constraints as speed limitations, obedience to traffic signals or designated lanes on our highways. U.S. residents today would be completely totally free to drive their Teslas, Maseratis and Kias at any speed they like; it would be termed "open driving." Some informed states would have "stand your roadway" laws, significance: Get outta my method or get run down, Pilgrim.

Put up 6-foot tall lane barriers, dig routine trenches throughout the asphalt to require drivers to slow down ... put metal detectors on all on-ramps so law enforcement can monitor what types of lorries are getting in the highways. Basic enough, to protect our uninfringible constitutional rights.

Sounds like liberty? Right?

Or is it madness?

THE TAX SYSTEM CAN HELP THE HOMELESS

Eugene, like cities across the country, is fighting with the homeless crisis. It is a nationwide crisis that should have a nationwide service (" Eugene's Homeless Policy Doesn't Measure Up," by maRco Elliot, EW, May 18). Among the very best ways for Congress to deal with this and other issues of hardship is our tax system. The broadened kid tax credit cut child poverty by 46 percent, and families had a better possibility to pay rent, utilities and purchase food.

A proposed renter tax credit would end families already having a hard time with poverty, yet paying up to 90 percent of their earnings for rent. With tax breaks for the wealthy are up for renewal, it is time instead to level the playing field and give those households experiencing hardship relief with these tax efforts.

America's future will be much better for it.

REVIVE TAXES

The repeating angst over raising-- or not raising-- the debt ceiling fuels the repeating debate over raising-- or not raising-- taxes. People who make more in an hour than I make in a year say that "smaller government is excellent," other than when it bestows favors on them.

Let's change the phrase "raising taxes" with the more accurate and simply phrase "restoring taxes." Earnings are as essential to a healthy economy and social structure that works for everyone as oxygen is to a living, operating body. If you run a home and depend upon earnings, you get what economy and profits have to do with.

Tax law is needlessly intricate. Justice is basic.
