At the heart of Harlingen lies a gem of tradition and pride—Harlingen High School, a bastion of community spirit and educational excellence. Recently, the school made headlines by installing a spectacular new sign that boldly declares, "Cardinal Spirit Never Dies." This striking addition not only marks the entrance but also encapsulates the essence of what it means to be a Cardinal.
The new sign reflects the enduring vitality of the school, welcoming generations of students, teachers, and staff. The motto serves as a tribute to the rich history and legacy that Harlingen High School embodies. It's a reminder that the spirit of its students, both past and present, is alive and well.
What prompted this inspirational change? The initiative was born from the Class of 1961 during their 60th reunion. During their online gathering in 2021, alumni, including long-time school board member Gerry Fleuriet, identified surplus funds and decided to create something meaningful for future generations.
“We wanted to create something that would resonate with all of our students and staff,” Fleuriet shared. “The new principal envisioned a large and significant entrance, which we all agreed was a fantastic idea.”
The sign has quickly become a point of pride for current students. Senior Luis Rodriguez, 17, expressed his personal connection to the motto: “To me, it represents the type of people that we are. We are passionate about what we do, and now I have a chance to leave my mark on the community.”
As students embrace the new sign, it also inspires them to reflect on their own contributions to the community. Junior Lola Tamez, 16, who plays on the girls’ basketball team, remarked, “The motto emphasizes our pride and loyalty to the school. We are always Cardinals.”
Dr. Peggy O’Neill, another proud alumna from the Class of 1961, noted that Cardinal spirit extends beyond sports—it includes cherished memories of friendships, teachers, and shared experiences that last a lifetime.
