In a concerning turn of events, San Diego police are ramping up security measures around local mosques and synagogues following the discovery of a suspicious package near the House of Israel in Balboa Park. This precautionary move comes as a response to potential threats during a sensitive time for the community.
On Saturday morning, around 9:30 AM, authorities received a call reporting a package found at the back of the House of Israel. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) quickly mobilized to assess the situation.
"A package was located at the back of the building, which led officers to request additional resources," the SDPD stated.
The Metro Arson Strike Team, alongside the San Diego Fire-Rescue Bomb Squad, responded promptly to investigate the package. The area was evacuated, and a thorough sweep for any additional packages was conducted to ensure public safety.
After an extensive examination, authorities concluded that the suspicious package was a hoax device, posing no actual danger to the public.
In light of this incident, the SDPD's Criminal Intelligence Unit is actively monitoring both local and national intelligence for any credible threats. In a statement, they emphasized:
"Out of an abundance of caution, SDPD will be conducting additional patrols in the area as well as near mosques and synagogues throughout the City for at least the next week to ensure the safety of all."
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the suspicious package to come forward. Tips can be directed to the Metro Arson Strike Team at (619) 236-6815 or San Diego Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and community cooperation in ensuring safety and security. As law enforcement increases their presence, residents are encouraged to remain alert and report any suspicious activities.
