Henrico County has taken a significant step toward addressing long-term environmental and infrastructure challenges with the formal appointment of its inaugural Sustainability and Resilience Advisory Committee. The move comes as local governments increasingly grapple with the impacts of climate change and the need for strategic planning.
The newly formed body is composed of nine residents, each bringing a distinct professional background to the table. The committee's roster includes experts in environmental science, civil engineering, urban planning, and public health. Members were selected through an application process designed to identify individuals with both relevant knowledge and a deep commitment to the county's future.
Officials state the committee's primary mandate is to provide independent recommendations to the Board of Supervisors. Their focus will be on developing actionable strategies to enhance the county's ability to withstand environmental, economic, and social disruptions while promoting sustainable practices.
The committee's work is expected to span a wide range of critical issues. Initial discussions will likely center on flood mitigation, energy efficiency in public infrastructure, and sustainable land use. The group is also anticipated to review the county's long-term capital projects through a resilience lens, ensuring new constructions and renovations are built to last in a changing climate.
“This is about proactive stewardship,” a county spokesperson told BNN. “By convening this dedicated group of citizens, we are formally integrating forward-thinking sustainability and resilience into the core of our county’s planning process.”
The committee will hold its first organizational meeting in the coming weeks, where it will establish bylaws and set preliminary goals. Their recommendations, while advisory, are expected to carry significant weight as the county updates its comprehensive plan and manages its substantial infrastructure portfolio. Public engagement sessions are planned for later in the year to gather broader community input.
This initiative places Henrico alongside a growing number of municipal governments that are creating specialized advisory boards to tackle complex, interdisciplinary challenges that transcend traditional departmental boundaries.
