A tranquil evening at the Salem Union Gospel Mission turned into a bloodbath when a Bend man allegedly attacked staff and guests in a shocking stabbing spree. Witnesses describe scenes of terror as the violence unfolded without warning during what should have been a routine shelter check-in process.
Emergency crews transported eight victims to Salem Hospital with serious injuries, while four others were treated on-site for superficial wounds. Hospital officials confirmed two victims required emergency surgery but are now in stable condition.
"This tragedy strikes at the heart of our mission to provide safe haven," said Union Gospel Mission director Marcia Yang. "We're working closely with authorities while focusing on victim support and counseling services." The shelter has temporarily suspended new intakes while security protocols undergo complete review.
Prosecutors have filed multiple assault charges against the 34-year-old suspect, who remains held without bail. Court documents reveal a complex mental health history, though officials emphasize this doesn't excuse the violence. The suspect's preliminary hearing is set for June 18th.
