Houston Independent School District (HISD) officials are applauding improved STAAR test results, but the victory lap is drowned out by growing anger from parents and students over Superintendent Mike Miles' questionable spending habits. While classrooms celebrate academic progress, many demand transparency—and accountability—for the district’s financial decisions.
Parents erupted after reports revealed Superintendent Miles expensed:
"We’re using 10-year-old textbooks while he’s flying business class," said Westside High junior Priya Patel, organizer of a 200-student walkout last Thursday. "Celebrating test scores feels hypocritical when our art programs just got cut."
The school board vows an independent audit, but with Miles’ contract extension pending, tensions are reaching a boiling point. Meanwhile, teachers brace for another year of tight budgets—and tougher scrutiny.
