Indiana Department of Health reports 46 abortions in last quarter of 2023


INDIANAPOLIS - - The Indiana Department of Health reported that 46 abortions took place in the fourth quarter of 2023, the first full quarter where Indiana's near-total abortion restriction was in impact.

According to data released on Monday by the department, the 46 abortions that happened in the last quarter of 2023 was compared to the 1,724 that occurred in the last quarter of 2022 and the 1,979 that happened in the last quarter of 2021.

This follows Senate Enrolled Act No. 1 was signed into law in August 2022 and was officially executed in August 2023 after several efforts to block it through legal difficulties. The bill, according to previous reports, forbids all abortions in the state of Indiana other than in three cases:


  • When reasonable medical judgment dictates that performing the abortion is needed to avoid death or a major danger of significant of irreversible and substantial physical problems of a significant physical function, or the "health or life exception."


  • When the pregnant individual receives a diagnosis of a lethal fetal abnormality

  • When the pregnant individual is a victim of rape or incest,
