INDIANAPOLIS-- An Indiana bill prohibiting gender-affirming look after minors that was initially passed in 2023 can now go into effect immediately, a court ruled Tuesday.
The US Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals issued a remain on Tuesday that lifted an injunction from a lower court. The injunction, which was given in June 2023, blocked a passed bill that banned gender-affirming look after Hoosiers under the age of 18.
Senate Bill 480, which was passed during Indiana's 2023 legal session, was signed into law over 10 months back by Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb. The signing was one day after the governor described the bill as being "clear as mud" and was met heavy criticism from challengers, including the American Civil Liberties Union.

The ACLU of Indiana responded by submitting a lawsuit requesting a preliminary injunction on behalf of 4 transgender clients and an Indiana doctor who offers transgender healthcare. The injunction was approved on June 16, 2023, and the ban on gender-affirming take care of minors was partly blocked.
Now, that block has been raised. The law, which was initially set to work on July 1, 2023, will now take effect instantly.
Since Tuesday, Feb. 27, Indiana law prohibits medical service providers from offering gender-affirming healthcare to any state citizen under the age of 18. Consisted of in the definition of gender-affirming care is:
- Gender-transitioning surgical treatments
- Hormone treatments
- Puberty blockers
Made illegal by SB 480 is intentionally "abetting another doctor or aiding or specialist in the provision of gender shift treatments to a small." For more on the bill, click on this link.
In reaction to the court's actions, the ACLU and ACLU of Indiana launched a joint declaration on Tuesday:
" This ruling is beyond frustrating and a heartbreaking development for thousands of transgender youth, their doctors, and their families. As we and our clients consider our next actions, we want all the transgender youth of Indiana to understand this fight is far from over and we will continue to challenge this law till it is completely beat and Indiana is made a safer place to raise every household."
