BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Jimmy Jackson era at South Dakota State commenced with a decisive 45-7 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday evening at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. The Jackrabbits, under their new leadership, showcased a dominant performance in the season opener for both teams.
The home team established control early, marching 80 yards on their inaugural drive, which culminated in a 4-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Davis. This opening statement set a relentless pace, with the offense finding the end zone on its first three possessions. Quarterback Mark Gronowski connected with Jaxon Janke for a 28-yard scoring pass, further extending the lead and putting the Hornets on their heels from the outset.
While the offense accumulated points, the Jackrabbits' defense was equally formidable. The unit stifled Sacramento State’s rushing attack, allowing a meager 49 yards on the ground throughout the contest. Their pressure was constant, disrupting the Hornets' offensive rhythm and forcing key punts that maintained South Dakota State's field position advantage.
The victory was a complete team effort, with special teams playing a pivotal role. Hunter Dustman was perfect on six extra-point attempts and also drilled a 41-yard field goal. Punter Brady Weppner effectively flipped the field when called upon, pinning the Hornets deep in their own territory on multiple occasions.
With a successful debut under their belts, the team now turns its attention to a significant road test. They are scheduled to face the reigning SEC champions in a highly anticipated matchup next Saturday. This victory provides strong momentum as they prepare for one of the most challenging games on their schedule.
