John & Shari: Why are individuals turning away from organized religion?

Only 39% of Americans said that religious beliefs is "very important" to them, according to a recent Wall Street Journal/National Opinion Research Center poll, down from 65% 25 years back.

" I think that it represents an extreme shift in America's adherence to spiritual teachings," guest host Greg Tomlin stated on The John Curley and Shari Elliker Show Monday. "And I personally believe it's a problem for our country. And for each complex problem, there's an answer that is clear, easy, and wrong. I believe it's a really multifaceted and complex problem, to state the least.".

Shari said her grandpa was a minister and religion played a huge part in her life, however that has actually considering that altered.

" I matured in the church, and it indicated a lot to me. And I can remember the church being the neighborhood that you belong to more so than even your neighbors," Shari said. "I mean, it was the church that you depend on if there was difficulty, or I can remember my mommy making baked products and doing things for individuals that remained in the church that were going through hard times.".

Shari said her family moved a number of times, which led them to stop going to church.

" I think part of the problem is the concerns have altered in time," Greg stated. "I don't think the Billy Graham message would work for this contemporary generation since no longer is culture asking ‘‘ how do I be good?' Culture is now asking, ‘‘ what is excellent?' Which's an entirely various concern basically.".

Greg stated that he thinks the church has taken individuals for given and presumed people would constantly exist, declaring religious beliefs is moving away from cities and moving into backwoods where people discover their "bubble.".

Shari also said that individuals aren't making religion a top priority.

" The concept that we are so busy. We used to make it a regular ritual. We went to church every Sunday. We got dressed up and we went we every vacation. We existed. I don't understand anybody that does that anymore. I do not know anyone that even goes to Christmas services," Shari stated.

Both agree that the unveiled scandals linked to organized religion have actually turned many people off.

" I have a great deal of Catholic buddies who turned away since of the dreadful scandal and the lack of trust that they have in the organization of religious beliefs, in business of religious beliefs, with the televangelists, with the priests with all of these things," Shari stated. "It just makes people not want to put their faith in something that has harmed people.".

Both commented that a parish that fits an individual can be extremely attractive and permits someone to be part of a neighborhood.

By contrast, the only value that has grown in America is the love of cash. 43% call cash "very important" compared to 31% at the turn of the century.
