Kansas City city groups join massive aid effort to Israeli and Gaza citizens


KANSAS CITY, Mo. - - Hundreds of people around the Kansas City metro contributed and assisted leave materials for individuals impacted by the growing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

" I certainly had to take a break at some point," said Hannah Smuckler while she helped gather materials at the KU Hillel.

Her family is safe in Jerusalem but just after avoiding dangerous locations in Israel previously in the dispute.

" I believe it's extremely essential to do whatever we can here in America to assist everyone back in Israel," Smuckler said. "Especially, I understand a lot of individuals living there being so significantly affected by everything that's going on."

Professional athletes for Israel helped pull everything together and founder Daniel Posner says similar efforts are taking place on other schools. His organization was formed to teach more individuals about Israel by bringing groups and athletes to the country. Now those trips are up in the air.

" Now's the time to help out, to make a difference," Posner stated. "And trainees, especially Jewish trainees, feel defenseless and hopeless, they wish to have the ability to have an effect, they wish to be able to help Israelis."

In Lenexa, Heart to Heart International volunteers did essentially the same work, packaging comparable supplies to also send out to a growing warzone.

" I just truly wanted to participate and actually help with something," stated volunteer Christina Silin. "Feel like I'm in fact doing something."

Heart to Heart sends out sets like these to the region all year long, even before the dispute began.

" We have a delivery of medications and hygiene kits that left our warehouse about 4 days before the war started and it's still in path," stated CEO Kim Carroll.

That shipping container is supposed to go to the Gaza Strip however if it can't arrive because of restrictions on what materials are allowed, Carroll states it'll be redirected to the West Bank.

Other packages are going to Israel, where people are displaced, and even Lebanon where Carroll states this olden dispute is developing fairly brand-new challenges for the companies trying to assist.

"We don't normally get wound care supplies contributed to us however there's a big requirement for that provided the nature of the conflict right now," Carroll stated.
